Giant Tech Companies Are Investing in The Metaverse
Published: March 29, 2022
The term “metaverse” is not new. It has been around for decades, along with ideas and inventions like 3D computing, augmented reality, and virtual reality. This recent newfound curiosity about the metaverse comes from the need to reinvent the internet.
The metaverse is a space that is always available, and it is shared by people who want to access it. They can socialize, connect, and play with their previously-built avatars.
One of the world’s most famous websites, Facebook, rebranded and started the big hype around the metaverse. Last year, founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would rebrand itself under the name Meta.
Microsoft is another company venturing into the metaverse with the planned acquisition of ActivisionBlizzard, worth over $69 billion.
Additionally, Roblox, Minecraft, and Rec Room have been discussing what the metaverse makes look like. Some people believe the metaverse already exists in worlds built by games like Minecraft.
And it’s not just these companies! Some of the most valuable brands like Apple, Nvidia, HTC, Valve, Epic, and more have been looking for new ways to connect online so that they can join the metaverse!
Companies expect the metaverse will be available through headsets, so new headsets are expected from companies like Microsoft and Facebook.
On top of this, governments like Barbados have already mentioned they want an embassy in the virtual world.
Supporters of the idea of the metaverse have described it as a world that is parallel to our IRL lives. It’s a world with neighborhoods where we live, places we go, etc.
However, it is still unknown whether it will all fit in one single metaverse or spread out across more. Another unclear thing is whether headsets made by one company will be able to access a world built by another.
Hence, the headsets may prove to be the biggest problem against the idea of the metaverse mentioned.
There may be a lot we still don’t know about the metaverse, but the idea of being able to gather around virtually is here to stay!
