4. 50% of smartphone users pick up their phones first thing after waking up.

What was the first thing you did after waking up this morning? Well, according to ExpressPigeon, if you’re like half of the smartphone users out there, you simply had to check your phone right away.

5. There are over 5 billion mobile device users in the world.

(Pew Research Center)

The growth of mobile technology in recent years is exponential, but not at an equal rate globally. According to new studies, more than 5.19 billion of the over 7.8 billion people on earth use a mobile phone. However, people in advanced economies (i.e., South Korea or Israel) use more mobile devices (smartphones especially) than those in emerging economies such as India, Kenya, Indonesia, Tunisia, Mexico, and the Philippines.

6. There are already more than 3.5 billion smartphone users globally.

How many people have smartphones throughout the world? According to reports from 2018, 39% of the global population owned a smartphone, which was over 3 billion. In 2020, of the 5.19 billion people who own cell phones, 3.5 billion are smartphone users. The number is even expected to increase to 3.8 billion by 2021.

7. On average, 69% of the time users spend looking at media online is done through their smartphones.

While these mobile usage statistics from 2018 come from comScore, research by Nielsen found out that an average American adult spends over 11 hours every day watching, listening to, reading, and interacting with media. This would mean an average adult spends 7.6 hours using their smartphone every day.

8. By 2025, 72% of internet use will come from mobile alone.

The future of mobile marketing is transitioning toward mobile. These smartphone usage statistics from CNBC indicate that mobile devices are a powerful weapon of interaction, which brands must take advantage of.

9. 50% of the time that users spend on their smartphones is dedicated to mobile applications.

Gen X and Gen Z (especially Millennials) are the most mobile-inclined age groups. People within this age bracket spend half of the time used on their smartphone in mobile apps, as we can see in comScore’s smartphone statistics. The figure climbs up to 66% for people within the 18–24 age bracket.

Mobile Marketing Figures

10. There are two popular ways to optimize for mobile.

According to a 2014 report by Adestra, the two most popular ways to optimize for mobile are by improving templates for all devices and then by creating responsive email templates.

11. 61% of users would not return to a site they had problems accessing.

(MicKinsey & Company)

Here’s a caveat! According to mobile website statistics, 61% of users do not return to a website that they have had problems accessing. Additionally, 40% of those decide to go to a competitor’s site!

12. 68% of companies have integrated mobile marketing as part of their overall marketing strategy.

Optimizing marketing strategies toward mobile is now a global trend in the commerce industry. It’s no surprise, then, that 71% of sellers consider mobile marketing a fundamental strategy for a company to grow, according to mobile marketing statistics.

13. 90% of Facebook’s advertising income is generated via smartphone use.

The quick rise of the social media giant Facebook is fueled by its mobile ads. According to this source, 90% of all advertising incomes generated by Facebook are sourced from mobile. According to the latest Instagram statistics, Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing platform generated $20 billion in ad revenue last year. Instagram is expected to continue to lead Facebook’s ad revenue growth, and it could soon make up the majority of Facebook’s ad revenue.

14. 51% of all digital ad budgets in 2016 invested in mobile.

Unsurprisingly, the most suitable platform for digital ads is on mobile devices. And according to the mobile statistics by Pricewaterhouse Coopers and IAB, more than half of all types of these ads went to mobile.

15. 80% of the best Alexa websites of 2017 were adapted to mobile devices.

This is only confirmation of what these stats continue to show. If you want your website to perform well, it must be optimized for mobile.

16. 90% of users make purchasing decisions through their mobile device.

(The Economic Times)

This mobile device usage data demonstrates how smartphones help us buy and sell products. According to a recent study, more than 90% of consumers use their smartphone to make an impulsive purchase. This is particularly true in the case of commercial shopping categories like fashion, music, travel, and movies.

17. In 2018, 52.2% of all global internet traffic came from mobile.

What percentage of internet traffic is mobile? Well, according to research from 2018, more than half of all web users use mobile devices. That’s an increase of 1.9% when compared to stats from the previous year.

18. 70% of consumers delete emails that aren’t easy to read on mobile.

Email marketing is a key part of a complete mobile marketing strategy. The percentage of users accessing email from their mobile devices continues to grow. According to email marketing stats, 1.7 billion users are accessing their email on mobile. With smartphone usage statistics showing that 70% of consumers immediately deleted emails that didn’t look good on mobile, email marketing must be developed with mobile devices in mind.

19. In 2019, 72% of digital advertising spending in the US was mobile advertising.

This forecast was made in 2015. By 2021, spending on mobile advertising is expected to hit 80%, or close to that, according to various mobile marketing stats.

20. 57% of users won’t refer anyone to websites that are poorly optimized for mobile.

(Social Media Today)

Mobile is king! According to data from Social Media Today, the majority of users won’t recommend a website that isn’t easy to use on a mobile device. While this is true for all types of websites, poor mobile optimization probably has the biggest impact on online stores. Taking into account the latest ecommerce statistics that show 40% of all retail sales in the US are m-commerce transactions, it’s essential to optimize websites for mobile devices.

21. More than 50% of those who see a mobile ad take an action.

According to Google data, after seeing an ad on their smartphone, more than half of people conduct a mobile search to learn more about the advertised product. Consequently, more than half of those who conduct a search will then make a purchase, according to Search Engine Land. This well explains how powerful and effective it is to place advertisements that are accessible via mobile and why they should never be ignored in a marketing strategy.

Mobile App Usage Statistics

22. There are approximately 12 million mobile app developers in the world.

(Business of Apps)

Their products have led to the existence of approximately 2.1 million mobile applications on Android’s Google Play, 1.8 million on Apple’s App Store, and 669,000 on Windows. Mobile app development is one of the most thriving markets of the decade.

23. Mobile apps were downloaded nearly 200 billion times in 2017.

(Business of Apps)

As revealed by the mobile device usage statistics compiled in 2018, there were approximately 200 billion mobile application downloads in 2017 alone. Additionally, in 2016, there were 25 billion downloads for iOS and 90 billion downloads made by Android users.

24. In-app ad spend will reach $201 billion in 2021 globally.

(App Annie)

It is estimated that in the United States, $25 billion has been invested in advertising for mobile applications, according to recent mobile marketing stats. Generally, around half of the projected $201 billion ad spend should be for mobile. However, that portion continues to rise as global in-app ads continue to leverage the growth of mobile advertising.

25. Mobile websites have 8.7 million more unique visitors every month than apps.

We already know that we spend more than half of our media time on mobile apps every day. However, according to mobile-friendly website statistics, while visitors spend more time using mobile apps, mobile websites actually get 16 times more (unique) visitors every month. This stat is based on a comparison of the 500 top-ranking websites around the world.

26. On average, people use 9 mobile apps per day and 30 per month.

This stat seems a bit conservative compared to App Annie’s data, which reports 40 apps per month and three hours of use daily. To confirm the veracity of what the various mobile stats say, how many apps have you opened since the start of your day? To be realistic, as an average user, the number should be getting close to nine already or even more.

27. 26% of consumers begin researching a potential purchase from a mobile application.

(Smart Insights)

Whether they’re purchasing something from an e-commerce platform or a physical store, more than a quarter of buyers will first research a possible purchase with a mobile application.

Mobile Search Statistics

28. 48% of buyers use their mobile device to search for products they’re interested in.

Nearly half of buyers use a mobile device to help them make a purchase in some way. Interestingly, 92% of users searching for a specific product will complete the purchase. Additionally, 70% of buyers between 18 and 39 years old use their cell phone to search for information before buying something. As mentioned earlier, the younger generations are the most inclined to use mobile, according to mobile search statistics.

29. 63,000 searches are made on Google every second.

(Search Engine Land)

Today’s buyers want to have control in the purchase process, so showing up in well-ordered and classified search engines will make your potential customers happy to access your site. With Google receiving more than 63,000 searches per second every day, they’re worth your attention. This translates to over 2 trillion searches every single year, according to mobile statistics.

30. Google dominates the search engine market on mobile with control in 10 countries.

(Smart Insights)

Google has more searches on mobile than desktop in 10 countries, including the US and Japan. So having a responsive design is vital. If your website isn’t optimized for mobile, you risk losing a good portion of your potential customers, according to Smart Insights’ statistics on mobile vs desktop usage in 2018.

31. Google continues to be the main search engine from a mobile device with 96% of users, followed by Yahoo with 2% and Bing, 1%.

(Wired SEO)

Also, during the past year, Google accounted for 79% of all global desktop search traffic, followed by Bing (with around 7.25%, Baidu with 6.55%, and Yahoo with 5.06%). This further cements that we must inevitably submit to the rules set by the Google giant, keep up with the changes established by its algorithm, and understand its strengths and weaknesses.

Mobile Videos Statistics

32. 48% of Millennials watch videos on mobile.

(Business of Apps)

Millennials include a wide age group, encapsulating people aged 18–40. This demographic tends to be a bit more tech savvy, especially with their phones. With this stat in mind, if the Millennials are your target audience, take advantage!

33. There’s a 100% increase in mobile video uploads every year.

A mobile marketing strategy without video promotions is incomplete. Internet videos have literally exploded in the past five years. According to mobile marketing statistics from 2018, YouTube data shows that the number of videos viewed on mobile devices is doubling year on year. In fact, 300 video hours are uploaded on the side every single minute. Over the next year, Medium claims video will take up 70% of all web traffic!

34. Online video ads increase purchase intent by 97%.

Online video ads also increase brand recognition by 139%. In fact, after watching a video, 64% of users are more predisposed to online shopping. Also, mobile stats from the same source state that 65% of marketers in the US have plans for their mobile ad spend to consist of videos. Considering this, it’s clear what format you should pay attention to.

35. YouTube has approximately 2 billion users.

While this may sound unreal for just a single internet platform, the latest YouTube stats only describe how powerful YouTube has quickly become. According to mobile video marketing statistics, YouTube having nearly 2 billion of the total number of people using the internet means they have a third of all global internet users.

We can no longer ignore mobile marketing in our digital marketing strategy. If we want to get ahead of the game, we must optimize our websites and campaigns with these mobile marketing statistics in mind. The following include the key points derived from the article:

  • The growth of mobile internet users is staggering.
  • Marketing departments are optimizing for mobile strategies.
  • Consumers will recommend companies that provide a good user experience on mobile.
  • More than half of the total digital ad revenues are generated from mobile.
