Amazon Might Create A Mysterious AR Smart Home Product
Published: April 20, 2022
Amazon might be the newest company venturing into augmented reality (AR) with a new mysterious, smart home product. According to job listings reported by The Protocol, they’re hiring for a “new-to-world smart-home product” that uses “XR” technology.
One listing looks for a “Software Engineer – XR/AR, XR/AR devices.” The job description says that the position will include “developing key software and architecture for a new-to-world smart-home product.”
The other listing says they are looking for a “Sr. Technical Program Manager, New Products – XR.” This listing and another one require qualifications like “experience building deeply technical products, e.g., AI/ML, robotics, games.”
Amazon could have an incredible advantage in this area since they already sell and use many smart home tools and gadgets. Just imagine if the Amazon AR glasses could connect to Alexa devices.
The same company has already made devices like the Amazon Echo smart speaker and the home robot Astro. And even though the Fire Phone was a failed idea, this Amazon-made phone could change what was on the screen based on your perspective.
However, Amazon is not the only company that has started creating AR / VR devices. A rumored Apple AR / VR headset is expected to launch in 2023, while Meta already makes the Quest headset, and they’re planning on releasing AR glasses in 2024.
Additionally, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has made smart glasses in a partnership with Ray-Ban, while Snapchat announced its first AR glasses in December.
As many big companies are venturing towards AR, we’ll see whether Amazon’s market share and gadgets will be enough for Amazon to make the next big thing!
